Both teams have a long history in Maryland and are among the most popular sports franchises in the state. The Ravens were founded in 1996 and have won two Super Bowls, while the Commanders have been around since 1932 and have won three Super Bowl.

The Ravens are the more successful of the two teams lately.

Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens are a professional American football team based in Baltimore, Maryland. The Ravens compete in the National Football League as a member club of the American Football Conference North division. The team plays its home games at M&T Bank Stadium and is headquartered in Owings Mills, Maryland.

The team is coached by John Harbaugh. Since joining the NFL, the Ravens have won two Super Bowl Championships (2013, 2001). Their rivalry with the Pittsburgh Steelers is one of the most heated in the NFL.

The headquarters and training facility for the team reside in Ashburn, Virginia.

The team has played more than 1,000 games and is one of only five in the NFL with over 600 victories. Washington was among the first NFL clubs to have a fight song, “Hail to the Commanders,” played by their marching band after each home touchdown. In 2022, Sportico valued the franchise at about $4.78 billion, making it the NFL’s eighth most valuable team.

The Redskins team name has been a source of contention for decades. The Boston Braves became the Washington Redskins in 1932, and the name was changed to Redskin two years later. For decades, many people found the term “redskin” to be insulting. In 2020, several NFL and team sponsors put intense pressure on the league to retire it as part of a wave of other name changes in response to the George Floyd demonstrations. The franchise reverted to its original name, Washington Football Team, for just two seasons before changing its moniker to Commanders in 2022.
